About the Jr. Counselor Program

This junior counselor program will provide 12 to 14 year olds with the training and education required of a camp counselor. The StaffStart program helps participants build knowledge, attitudes, and skills they will need to be responsible counselors for youth programs. 

Program Objectives

- Provide instruction on the rules/procedures of the SUMFUN Summer Day Camp.
- Provide instruction in youth management skills and techniques.
- Provide opportunities to interact with seasoned, experienced staff.
- Provide the knowledge and skills to intern with the SUMFUN program.
- Provide CPR and First-Aid certification training. 
- Lessons are grouped into five main areas: behaviors, response, mentoring, leadership, and professionalism.

Outcomes
- Participants receive a t-shirt, participant manual, and CPR/AED/First Aid certification.
- A volunteer internship as a Junior Counselor will be offered during the summer for those who successfully complete the course, mentored by our professional Camp Staff.


Grading Scale
Course is graded on pass/fail only. Successful completion of the program will allow the student to work as an unpaid intern with the SUMFUN program. Interns are expected to work one to three days each week to continue to build their skills and knowledge within the program.

- Closed toed shoes
- Lunch
- Participants can bring swim suits on swimming days
